Yay! I'm updating comics again! Sorry for the prolonged absence. Had a lot of crazy stuff going on, the least of which was Sarah and I moving to Baltimore city proper.
Speaking of that, here's the first in a series of strips detailing the comical portions of the big move. This one is based on an actual conversation I had with someone just before. Thankfully a lot of folks did turn out to help us and they were treated to donuts and Chap's Pit Beef (and several inches of rain...ungh...more on that one in a later strip, I think).

My visit to New York was highlighted by Dave Roman, my esteemed editor and all-around AWESOME guy, giving me, Sarah, and our buddy Mike a guided tour of the Nickelodeon offices in Times Square (including the soon-to-be empty Nick Mag offices *sniff*). We had a great time and hanging out with Dave was super-fun, even though we TOTALLY kept him late at work. The fact that he didn't have us out on our asses at 5:30 sharp is a testament to what a great guy he is.
I didn't actually act like this at Nick Studios, as I was trying to look cool for Dave, but it was definitely what I was thinking. Heh heh.
And yes, they DO have free fountain sodas!

It's been a while since I've posted some art cards. These are the ones did at Small Press Expo and Baltimore Comic Con.
( More Fairytale cards )
( Classic Comic Strip Characters )
( Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog )
And finally, my fav card so far...
What can I say? I love me some He-Man and the Masters of the Universe! :
Now to keep crackin' on my deadlines and prepping for Big Apple Comic Con this weekend. WOoooooo!

I did this as a follow-up to my previous strip about meeting people I admire. This weekend I'll have the opportunity to meet another major influence (as well as one of my favorite comic artists), Evan Dorkin, at Baltimore Comic Con. Though after my total face-plant with Julia Wertz, I've been driving myself nuts imagining all the ways I can screw this up. I think him whipping out a firearm and blasting me in the gut would be the least awkward and embarrassing.
Here's hoping I don't come back with a story even more horrifying (though hilarious) than this comic. Maybe I'll just chicken out and hide behind my table all weekend. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Oh god, and what am I gonna do when I meet William Shatner the weekend after that at the Big Apple Comic Con?! GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!

I was asked by a friend to do a poster for the Greenbelt Art Center's presentation of Little Shop of Horrors (he's the puppeteer for the plant). Pretty simple and cut-and-dry design, but still fun to do. ^_^
Any of you DC/<D locals should definitely check out the show if you're able. Support local theater! YAY!

Okay, so this is a slightly exaggerated account of my brief encounter with Ms. Julia Wertz at Small Press Expo this year. I believe a little bit of context is in order.
As I mention in this strip, Ms. Wertz's autobiographical webcomic, The Fart Party, helped inspire me to draw the comic strips that would become "I'm My Own Mascot". I discovered her stuff when a copy of her first book was accidently shipped to the comic shop where I worked at the time. I remember killing an entire shift reading it cover to cover. No one else really "got" it, but I really dug The Fart Party. I decided that I would produce my own comic in a similar format. The rest, as they say, is history.
So, flash forward to this past weekend at SPX. I knew Ms. Wertz was gonna be there and thought it would be nice to meet her and leave a copy of the first 'Mascot' book. As her comic was such an influence on mine, I wanted to show a bit of gratitude.
The show ended up being a VERY busy one for the studio. It was an almost non-stop flurry of commissions, art cards, meeting folks who liked our comics as well as a few of my editors, interviews for a couple podcasts (and even an Indonesian TV show), and...of course...promoting Interrobang Studios and our books.
Come Sunday, I was a wreck. I got a grand total of about 6 hours sleep over the weekend, I was sick and pukey, and to top it off it was freaking FREEZING in the exhibit hall that day. With about 20 minutes left in the show, I decided to walk around a bit since I didn't get to all weekend. Then it hit me...
I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT JULIA WERTZ!
I knew full well that if I tried to talk to her in the shape I was in, I would come off as a complete freak. Coupled with the fact that I'm ALREADY intimidated by other cartoonists (I don't know why but I just am), trying to meet her at that point was gonna be a big bowl of bad. However, I didn't know when I'd get another chance to do this. So, I figured I'd say "Hi", drop off the book, and then get the heck out of there before I made a horrible first impression.
Sarah and Sally teased me that it would be less creepy to just TALK to the woman and that I might as well sign it "Dear Julia, You smell nice! Signed, K-Bo."
I took this as a challenge to my manhood and did just that.
Exhausted, shaking from the cold, and almost ready to throw up, I went and gave Ms. Wertz the book before I thought better of the whole thing.
I made a complete tool of myself anyway. I even went so far as to end our encounter with "I'm gonna go this way now. Byeeee!" Way to go, K-Bo!
I proceeded to the bathroom and tossed my cookies (literally 'cuz that was practically all I had eaten that day).
My hope is that Ms. Wertz wrote me off as a creep, tossed the book, and soon forgot the about it. This way, next time I happen to meet her I WON'T make an ass of myself. I think this is good solid plan (in Bizarro World anyway).
In the meantime, I did this strip as a little bit of catharsis...and because my awkward embarrassment is actually pretty damn funny.
Anywho..."The Fart Party" belongs to Julia Wertz. If you feel so inclined, check her out at www.fartparty.org.

This time it's Hansel & Gretel and The Little Match Girl.

Wanna try to do a couple more for Small Press Expo this weekend. I keep hoping that if I keep doing these, my line and color work will get cleaner. No such luck yet. X_x

Hey guys! Really need your help on this one.
I submitted this as a t-shirt design for Threadless.com that is now up for scoring.

If you wanna see my little cartoon zombie as a t-shirt (or if you just wanna help a brutha out), go on their site and vote for it here: http://threadless.com/submission/231797/Vegetarian_Zombie
If you can, post this link in your journals, twitter, facebook, or whatever and get your friends to vote too.
Sadly, if I lose this I can't resubmit it and it will never get made into a shirt. *sadness* Not to mention the prize money would help a struggling freelance cartoonist and his four cats immensely. So, if you have a moment, please vote for the design: http://threadless.com/submission/231797/Vegetarian_Zombie
Thanks so much, gang! The time and help is very much appreciated.

The PTA for the local schools liked the tiger I did for them so much that they requested another. This one is gonna be used by one of the local high schools, I believe. Wish I could remember the name of it, but I do know it begins with an 'S' and they have a tiger for the mascot. :P

In celebration of Beatles day (9/9/09), I did a piece I had in my head for a long time, the Let It Be/Abbey Road era Beatles in the style of their 1960's cartoon television show (with a few subtle tweaks, namely John's jawline which became a lot narrower by this time). Hope you Beatles fans out there dig it! ^_^
One thing my recent contract work has taught me is how to better mimic other people's style and I think I really nailed it with these guys. Not something I wanna make a habit of, naturally, but it's nice to be able to pull out the skill when I need it.
Anyway, Happy Beatles Day everyone! :D

Got this urge around 2-3 in the morning to do some Pirates of Dark Water fan art. I put on my adventure playlist on iTunes and what should come on but the main theme from Pirates of the Caribbean. So for laughs, I sketched Dark Water in the style of the final one-sheet from the first PotC film.

Not entirely sure if I'll finish it. Mostly due to time and not being sure if I wanna devote the effort to a piece that isn't even my composition, let alone my own characters.
Still it would look cool and might be kind of fun. We'll see, I guess.
Oh, I also did a comic last night...

The situation was taken out of context and changed a bit, but I did really overhear a similar conversation in a Rite Aid a year or so ago. Be careful what you say, folks. You'll never know if a cartoonist is listening. :P

This started as a Facebook status update that I turned into a comic strip. I'm told other artists get this way too. X_x

Sometimes we fight, and it's not pretty.
Sorry it's been a while since my last update. Been workin' on a big freelance project (more on that later) and the usual studio stuff. Gonna try to bust out a few more comics in the coming days to catch up. :D
